The Senior Citizen Nutrition Program serves hot, well balanced
meals five days a week in congregate dining centers.
The meals are served at separate neighborhood locations
in parts of the North West Valley, West Los Angeles-Venice,
and Central Services Areas.
No pre-registration is necessary. Meals are served on
a first come, first served basis.
The meals are designed to include one-third of the recommended
dietary allowance (RDA). Menus typically include an
entree, two vegetables, bread, desert, milk, and juice.
The meals are prepared and delivered hot to the site by commercial
caterers.
For senior on restricted diets, the meals are low fat, low
sodium, and low in sugar. Complex carbohydrates are
stressed.
Meals are also delivered to "Shut-ins" senior
who are too ill or incapacitated to come to one of the sites.
This is a free meal lunch program. Seniors are asked
to contribute $1.00 - $1.25 per congregate or homebound meal.
Non-senior are required to pay a guest fee. (See director-in-charge
of nutrition site.)
The Los Angeles City Department of Recreation and Parks
provides hot, home delivered meals to low income " shut-in"
senior citizen who cannot afford to contribute the "suggested"
contribution. The seniors served are those living alone,
too old, frail, or sick to prepare adequate meals.
