A Better LA - Pete Carroll’s Nonprofit

A Better LA is a nonprofit organization comprised of local leaders from the private, non-profit, social service, faith-based, education and law enforcement sectors.  Their goal is to reduce gang violence in Los Angeles by empowering communities to change.  A Better LA offers free personal development classes to adults that live/work in the Exposition Park community, that teach participants how to be effective thinkers, and encourages them to create the future they really want.

Brotherhood Crusade

Brotherhood Crusade is a nonprofit whose principal mission is dedicated to building and sustaining an institution that raises funds and resources from within the community and distributes those funds directly back into the community.  Brotherhood Crusade provides services to teens in EXPO Center’s Teen Club, and their families.  The program includes tutoring, parenting and financial literacy classes, family counseling services, and higher education planning.

Community Services Unlimited, Inc. (CSU)

“From the Ground Up” Gardening Program brings together seniors and young people of various ages to create a mini-urban farm and to promote learning across generations.

Los Angeles Philharmonic & Harmony Project

EXPO Center Youth Orchestra: EXPO Center has teamed up with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Harmony Project to create a youth orchestra for children, ages 7-15, who reside in EXPO Center’s surrounding neighborhoods.  The central goal of the program is to increase access to quality instrumental music instruction and ensemble work for the underserved community around Exposition Park.  Participation in the Youth Orchestra enables children and families to achieve their goals and enhance their lives by utilizing the tools learned through music-making.  Participation in the EXPO Center Youth Orchestra promotes the healthy development of youth through the study, practice and performance of music that encourages creative, constructive expression.

Intel Computer Clubhouse Network

Intel Computer Clubhouse Network inspires and excites young people from underserved communities to become self-motivated and confident learners, through the use of technology, by engaging them in hands-on and manipulative participatory experiences that make learning fun.

Jewish Vocational Services (JVS)

BankWorks Program: A free, comprehensive bank career-training program to prepare participants, from low-income communities with barriers to employment, for entry-level jobs as bank tellers.  Upon successful completion of the program, BankWorks graduates are referred for job placement at the program’s partner banks and receive ongoing coaching for career advancement.

Kids in Sports (KIS)

Kids in Sports provides youth, ages 5-17, with the opportunity to participate in a variety of sports leagues.  The Club’s low fee allows thousands of kids a unique opportunity to increase levels of fitness and experience the thrill of being part of a team.  Youth will gain self-confidence from learning and mastering new sports skills.

LA84 Foundation

Learn to Swim Program: EXPO Center has developed a partnership with over 25 schools within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) to provide a free swim program for youth grades K-12.  As part of the school’s PE requirement, students accompanied by their teacher, come to EXPO Center for a ten-week swim program.  At the end of the program, students receive a Red Cross Water Safety Certificate.  This grant is funded by the LA84 Foundation

City of Los Angeles (COLA) Swim Team: Highly competitive swim program designed to train and develop swimmers to compete at the National level through United States Swimming competitions.

Los Angeles Police Department (Southwest Division)

Deputy Auxiliary Program (DAP): This weekly program teaches youth, ages 9-13, a sense of civic responsibility, good citizenship, a positive relationship with law enforcement, and develops leadership abilities in the participants.  DAP also participates in recreational field trips.
